Area Data
Nestled under an canopy of lush evergreens beneath the peaks of the North Shore Mountains, North Vancouver is located on the North Shore of Vancouver, one of the most beautiful and exclusive areas in Greater Vancouver.

The City of North Vancouver is a vibrant community where more than 48,000 citizens have chosen to make their home. Surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, residents enjoy a quality of life comprised of safe, clean neighbourhoods and responsible municipal governance. The City boasts a diverse culture, as well as a thriving arts community and a range of recreational activities to explore.

The Capilano River is considered to be the physical boundary between West Vancouver on the west and North Vancouver on the East. For general purposes the river begins as the overflow from Cleveland Dam which was built to create a municipal water reservoir that is part of a system that services the region. The river’s true source is somewhere beyond the dam in the surrounding mountains that create this watershed.

As the Capilano courses through the forests and canyons to Burrard Inlet it is part of a large regional park that incorporates many recreational opportunities. At Cleveland Dam, viewing areas, picnic grounds and walking trails serviced by public facilities and a free parking lot are open to public use. A short way downstream is the Salmon Hatchery with extensive educational displays covering many aspects of the salmon life cycle and the functioning of the hatchery. Viewing areas include a glass side to the fish ladder allowing visitors the opportunity to see the salmon migrate upstream to where they will be harvested of their eggs. The educational portion of the facility is free to the public. As well more river viewpoints and trails are available for exploring. Depending on water levels a system of trails follows the river much of its distance to the inlet. All of these facilities are accessible from Capilano Road in North Vancouver.

Edgemont Village is a charming alpine village located below Grouse Mountain in the heart of the Capilano Highlands. The Village has something for everyone with great restaurants, cafes, unique shops and services.

Recreation
North Vancouver offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities such as boating, kayaking, fishing, camping, scuba diving, canoeing, hiking, mountain biking / climbing, rollerblading, skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing, group sports like soccer, football, rugby, baseball, hockey and many more sports and leisurely activities available in the North Shore Area.

History
In the late 1700s, Captain George Vancouver, sailing for the British Empire, was the first European to explore the inner waters of Burrard Inlet.
The first settler on the North Shore can be traced back to 1860, when a sawmill was built to harvest the trees. A few years later, with the mill near bankruptcy, it was purchased by an American from Maine by the name of Sewell Prescott Moody, who quickly made the mill profitable once again.

Clearing the land and harvesting trees, settlers started building homes and developing the North Shore. The first area to be developed is the area now known as Lower Lonsdale and from there the development grew and continues to grow up the slopes and out to the east and west.

By 1890, there were approximately 100 people calling the North Shore home. A formal petition was made to the Lieutenant Governor and the District Municipality of North Vancouver was declared in 1891.
